•    Supervises: Junior perfusion staff, perfusion trainees and perfusion assistants/technologists

 Primary purpose:
Plan, set up, operate and troubleshoot extracorporeal support systems (CPB, ECMO, short-term mechanical circulatory support, cell-saver) for cardiac surgical and critical-care patients; ensure physiologic stability and blood-management during procedures; lead perfusion quality, training and equipment stewardship.________________________________________
Key responsibilities:
1.    Deliver safe CPB: Prime, operate and wean cardiopulmonary bypass for congenital and acquired cardiac cases, managing flows, oxygenation, temperature control and anticoagulation per protocols.
2.    Extracorporeal support (ECMO/VAD): Initiate, manage and troubleshoot ECMO and short-term mechanical support at bedside; participate in cannulation teams and bedside ECMO care/handovers.
3.    Peri-bypass physiology & blood management: Monitor and manage ABGs/ACTs/coagulation, acid–base, hemoconcentration and blood-conservation techniques (cell-saver, ultrafiltration, transfusion strategy).
4.    Neonatal/infant adaptation: Tailor perfusion strategies for neonates and infants, including use of pediatric oxygenators and reduced-prime techniques; plan cases with surgeons and anaesthesia pre-op.
5.    Equipment & consumables: Prepare, test and maintain perfusion equipment and disposables (oxygenators, pumps, circuits, heat exchangers); complete checklists and coordinate preventive maintenance with Biomedical Engineering.
6.    Documentation & traceability: Maintain accurate perfusion records and logs (pump times, flows, drug dosing, ACT/ABG records, device serial/batch numbers) linked to patient files for HMIS and audits.
7.    Troubleshooting & emergency response: Rapidly recognise and resolve circuit/equipment failures intra-operatively and during ECMO runs; support emergency interventions (rewarming, return-to-bypass, salvage).
8.    Training & supervision: Train, supervise and assess junior perfusionists and technologists; maintain competency frameworks, run in-service education and sign off supervised competency.
9.    Quality, governance & procurement input: Lead or participate in M&M, audits and protocol development for anticoagulation and blood-management; advise on technical specifications and consumable stock planning.
10.    On-call & safety compliance: Participate in perfusion on-call rota (nights/weekends/holidays); adhere to IPC, PPE, sharps and blood-exposure precautions and maintain clear multidisciplinary communication under pressure.

Required qualifications:
Mandatory:
•    Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Technology, Biomedical Science, Respiratory/Cardiovascular Technology, or equivalent allied-health degree plus completion of an accredited clinical perfusion training program OR recognized clinical experience and competency in extracorporeal circulation. 
•    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate; Advanced Life Support (ACLS/PALS) recommended.
Preferred:
•    Prior pediatric/congenital perfusion experience (neonatal/infant CPB) and documented cell-saver/blood-conservation practice.
•    Formal ECMO training, competency certificates or relevant short courses.

Minimum experience
•    3–5 years’ active experience as a clinical perfusionist in cardiac surgical services; for pediatric-heavy caseloads, at least 2 years’ neonatal/infant bypass and ECMO exposure preferred.
•    Recent, demonstrable clinical activity (logbook) of CPB cases, ECMO runs and device management within the past 12–24 months.
