•    Reports to: Head of Nursing (professional line) and CSSD/Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Lead (operational line)
•    Supervises: Sterile services technicians, autoclave operators, CSSD assistants.

Primary purpose:
Ensure safe, validated and timely sterilization and decontamination of surgical instruments, consumables and sterile sets for cardiac operating theatres, ICU and wards by managing autoclave operations, enforcing sterilization quality assurance, training CSSD staff and maintaining sterile supply traceability.

Key responsibilities
1.    Operate and validate sterilization equipment (steam autoclaves — gravity and pre-vacuum, ETO where applicable) according to manufacturer instructions and hospital SOPs; perform routine cycle checks (Bowie-Dick, chemical and biological indicators) and record results.
2.    Manage end-to-end CSSD workflow: receive soiled instruments, supervise cleaning/decontamination, inspect/function-test instruments, configure loads and packaging correctly, run sterilization cycles, ensure proper drying and timely dispatch of sterile sets.
3.    Maintain complete traceability and documentation for all loads, devices and implants: cycle logs, implant serial/batch records, maintenance logs and archived records for audits and incident investigations.
4.    Enforce IPC and occupational safety in CSSD: correct PPE use, waste segregation, safe chemical handling, HBV vaccination compliance and prevention of reprocessing errors (wet packs, collapsed packaging).
5.    Prioritise turnaround to meet scheduled and emergency theatre lists; manage sterile stock and consumable inventory, monitor expiries and recommend reorder/stock levels and secure storage practices.
6.    Coordinate preventive maintenance, service contracts and urgent repairs with Biomedical Engineering and vendors; tag/remove unsafe equipment and maintain maintenance and spare-parts records.
7.    Train, supervise and competency-assess CSSD staff and theatre personnel on packing, load configuration, indicators, sterile storage and safe workflows; keep training and competency records.
8.    Perform first-line troubleshooting of autoclave faults (controls, seals, interlocks) and escalate complex failures with documented fault reports; implement corrective/preventive actions after non-conformances.
9.    Lead and participate in sterilization/IPC audits, root-cause analyses, M&M and quality improvement activities; prepare and follow up corrective action plans.
10.    Provide technical input to procurement for autoclaves, consumables, pouches/wraps, indicators and instrument trays; ensure CSSD documentation is maintained in English and operational communication with OTs/ICU is clear in local languages.

Required Qualification
Mandatory:
•    Registered Nurse (RN) with valid Afghanistan nursing licence/registration or Certificate in Sterile Services / CSSD Technician.
•    Certificate or training in Infection Prevention & Control or CSSD management.
Desirable
•    Additional technical certificate on autoclave operation, sterilization validation or biomedical equipment basics.
•    Familiarity with cardiac surgical instrument sets and implant handling.

Minimum experience
•    Minimum 2–4 years clinical or CSSD experience in tertiary hospital settings; at least 12 months direct experience operating autoclaves/sterilizers and managing CSSD workflow in a surgical environment is strongly preferred.
•    Demonstrated experience of working with cardiac surgical instrument sets, implants, or complex instrument trays is an advantage.
