Mawlawi Rohullah Abdul Salaam, Under-Secretary General for Operational Affairs of the ARCS, participated in an online meeting with representatives of Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies from across the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting was held in the presence of Hossam Faysal, Head of the IFRC Delegation in Afghanistan, and focused on strengthening joint preparedness and coordination in response to the potential impacts of the El Niño climate phenomenon.

During the meeting, participants held comprehensive discussions on the El Niño phenomenon, climate change, and the potential risks arising from these factors. They also exchanged views on the potential impacts of this phenomenon, including drought, heavy rainfall, floods, and other climate-related events.

Participants emphasized the importance of risk assessment, enhancing preparedness measures, sharing information and expertise, and strengthening coordination among National Societies.

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants reaffirmed the importance of expanding preparedness programs, strengthening joint cooperation, and promoting the exchange of experiences and best practices to address the impacts of El Niño and other climate-related risks.

It is worth noting that El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon caused by unusually warm sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon influences global weather patterns and can lead to significant changes in rainfall, drought conditions, temperatures, and storm activity in different regions of the world.

The ARCS strives to strengthen its capacity for preparedness and effective response to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change, in close coordination with regional and international partners.
